I'm a bit surprised. I thought it was common knowledge to put the marine with the sniper rifle in the passenger seat of the warthog on the Halo 1 level Halo for example, in order to totally kick ass. I wasn't aware anybody DIDN'T do that, given that it was widespread around here as one of the first ever tips.
