I picked up Saga Volume 1 earlier this week for the first time. As soon as I finished it I ran out and bought the second volume. In spite of how ridiculous a lot of it is, I'm completely engrossed. It's another good example of how talent and passion can create something amazing for other people to enjoy. It doesn't feel like it was made for me though, or for anyone who's actually buying it. It feels like it was made for the creators. I feel like I'm getting a peak into their minds when I read it. That's what I seem to find so fascinating.
I expect that a lot of this will hold true with Mayflower, given everything I've heard you say about it and the little bit I've seen so far. :)
