In Response To: Re: The Leveller, Mjarin, Myth III e.t.c. (Denorius)

: Myth I Prologue : "Connacht was the first human in a
: thousand years to survive a battle with the
: Myrkridia...and he didn’t just survive, he
: prevailed"

: So if the Myrkridia were around for 1000 years before
: Connacht kicked their ass, then this destroys your
: theory of the 500 years of light and 500 years of
: darkness completely.

: If the Myrkridia were around for 1000 years and Connacht
: was the FIRST to beat them back, then those WHOLE 1000
: years were an age of darkness.

Hmm, that is an interesting point, but in light of all the evidence in the other direction I'm tempted to rationalize it. It doesn't say that the Myrkridia were around terrorizing mankind for all those thousand years, just that nobody had fought them and won in that time. They might not have even been around at all during most of that time: maybe they're summoned only by Levellers, like the undead, and hadn't been seen at all since Tireces ended the last dark age.

Even if they were around, they could have been a small but undefeated force, terrible monsters hiding in the forests but rarely seen in the civilized lands, until Moagim rallied them into a fighting force to take down civilization, and it wasn't until Connacht that anybody started beating them back again. Consider for comparison the Trow: someone in the time of Myth II might say "Nobody has won a battle with the Trow in 60 years", mostly because the Trow have kept to themselves since Balor died, but surely anyone who tried to mess with them since then lost.

: BTW: If the comet thats supposedly holds the spirit of
: the Leveler return only each 1000 Years, how is it
: possible that Balor should have been around some 300
: years before the events of TFL? Doesnt make any sence
: either.

Nothing ever says that the comet holds the spirit of the Leveller. Just, there always seems to be a comet in the sky right as the ages are turning, right as the Leveller's about to be defeated.

Besides which, Balor was definitely around at least 50 years before TFL, when he sacked Muirthemne. Is that any less weird than 300 years? We actually used to ponder this problem (and the 300-years-ago Myrmidons thing would occasionally come up during it): when did the age really turn? When Balor showed up to sack Muirthemne, or when Alric killed him? Presuming a thousand year cycle like you are now, we reasoned that Connacht had ushered in a Light age a thousand years ago so the new age that Balor ushered in must be dark. So Balor showed up and crushed the Cath Bruig 50 years ago, so that should be when the last Light age ended, right? But then, Alric defeated him only 50 years later? Did Alric break the cycle? But the comet came, and Tharsis erupted, during the time of TFL, so it seems like that should be the celestially ordained time. So, did Balor show up early, and the last 50 years of the last Light age were actually dark somehow? Is that possible? And then hey look at this, it says Balor was around 300 years ago suborning the Myrmidons! Maybe... maybe the whole past thousand years haven't been light? Maybe it's only 500 years of light and 500 years of darkness, like it was pre-release?

But no, I would always argue, it's clearly a thousand years of darkness and a thousand years of light; look at all of these "thousand years" figures all over the text! Myth 3 sticks to that pattern because of this site; Scott Campbell, Myth 3's author, did his research here, on MBO. Bungie didn't have crap in the way of a Story Bible to give them. But then, a few years ago, someone posted a question here and that got me thinking, and I realized that what I had been arguing for almost a decade was completely wrong; and so was GURPS Myth, which I had so vehemently defended; and so was Myth III, which got its errors from GURPS and from me. All those people arguing for a short cycle before were right, and I was wrong; but now that mistake has spread far and wide, and it's heresy to argue against it... :\
