In Response To: Re: The Leveller, Mjarin, Myth III e.t.c. (Denorius)

: Cmn the Myrkridia killed so many humans that they had to
: build pyramids from their skulls. They erased entire
: armies and cities.

The same could be said for Balor's undead army; and they could have built skull platforms if they had been inclined to, at least they'd have had enough skulls to do so after killing off most of the world like they did. But that doesn't necessitate that the undead had been around in force for a thousand years.

: Even had they come out of the Dire
: Marsh only ONCE a YEAR to hunt and to destroy......
: how can there be an age of light if at least once a
: year monsters come and devastate a whole Province?

Who says they came out and devastated a whole province? And who says they lived in the Dire Marsh, besides Myth 3? The hypothetical that I'm painting is that Myrkridia were sparse predators roaming the untamed places of the world, until Moagim organized them into a world-slaughtering army. Consider for analogy sharks: for most of human history it would have been legit to say "no man had fought a shark and won in over a thousand years". (The water-land barrier is a problem with this analogy, but I'm having trouble coming up with a similarly dominant land predator that man hasn't been able to kill for a while).

Then some evil doctor comes along, straps frickin' lasers to the frickin' sharks, and unleashes an army of them on the world, until a sexy British spy loosens their bloodless grip from his lands... Wait I think I'm crossing my fictions here....

: Another thing: If there is indeed 500 years of light and
: 500 years of darkness - What is the trigger?

: The hero kills the Leveler - begin of 500 years of light.
: 500 years later beginning of an age of darkness?
: But the next Leveler has still 500 years to go - so what
: event triggers the age of darkness?

The idea is that the ages slowly turn dark. For a case study: Connacht defeats Moagim, banishes the Myrkridia and imprisons the Trow, and the Age of Light begins. Then after time Connacht grows worried of his fate, begins scouring the lands for lost artifacts, and eventually vanishes into the east on unknown business. Some centuries elapse during which the world is mundane and without a great hero, civilization grows fat and tired, and meanwhile, by means still unknown to us, Connacht becomes possessed by the Leveller. Some time later he returns under the name of Balor, and begins a campaign of evil. But there is much good in the world to resist him. Great nations of powerful Light warriors like the Myrmidons oppose him; but those he cannot defeat, he turns to his side with dark promises such as immortality. Gradually his army grows, he rallies old allies and enemies alike to his side, such as Damas and Balh'al, suborns powerful new players such as Myrdred to him as well, and when his power base is secure he brings full-scale war on the world. His armies slaughter the people of the eastern downs and press their way slowly into the heart of the Cath Bruig Empire, until finally, only 50 years before TFL, he brings down mighty Muirthemne itself. Still there is half a world remaining to be conquered; it takes him another 34 years to fight his way to the Cloudspine, then three years to break through the passes. Another six years it takes him to finish ravaging the mighty southern provinces of the West, before turning his eyes on the north, and then another seven years still before the North is on the brink of ruin. And just as it looks like finally all the lands will be crushed under his heel, a hero arises from the world's ashes, lops off his head, and his reign of terror is ended.

That's the actual timeline that TFL gives us. Three hundred years ago (from TFL's time), Balor suborned the Myrmidons to his side. Fifty years ago, Muirthemne fell. The first battle for Seven Gates ended thirteen years ago, after the Forest Giants had held it for three years before that. And the War in the North is in its seventh year as of the beginning of TFL. It takes time to destroy the world; by the end, the bulk of the world's population is your army of monsters, so you might think that with firepower like that it wouldn't take you long to win. But you don't start out with firepower like that, and not only does it take time to build it but you're constantly spending it in the process. Even the Leveller has to start small.

(Incidentally this is one of the things I disliked about Myth II: Soulblighter shows up and then BAM suddenly has a huge army of undead. It would work with BAM he's got the resurrected Myrkridia because there's a unique explanation for that, but already having a huge undead army so early after his arrival strained suspension of disbelief).

: Concerning Balor and the ages: An age takes as long as
: the Leveler is around. So if the Leveler is defeated
: in like 10 Years that the era/age was 1010 years.

: If the Leveler is so powerfull that u need some 300 Years
: to destroy him the age/era was 1300 years.

: So since a Leveler gets more and more powerfull each
: millenia each age/era takes longer.

: Tireces was a poet and philosopher - he returned as
: Moagim who was defeated pehaps after 10 years.

: Connacht was a warrior. He returned as Balor and was
: defeated after perhaps 50 years.

: Should Alric - a warrior AND powerfull magician- return
: as the Leveler, then to defeat HIM would take perhaps
: 100 years.

: So to say an age/era is 1000 years and/or 500 light and
: 500 dark is not convincing anyway

So you're arguing that there's not a fixed length to the cycle at all then? That it takes a thousand years plus however long it takes to defeat the Leveller? What happened to the thousand years of darkness during the Wind Age you were just promoting? Also, what of the clear thousand-year periods described in the Myth 2 epilogue, the Second, Third and Fourth Era Leveller's deaths?
