In Response To: Re: The Leveller, Mjarin, Myth III e.t.c. (Denorius)

: Soncerning the ages: It was never said that the Wind age
: was 1000 years but it was logical to assume since the
: Myrkridia were around for 1000 Years.

: What chanced my Mind is the Leveler thing: The Leveler
: return each 1000 years - but how long does it take to
: defeat him? How long is he around?

: If Balor was around 300 years BEFORE the events of TFL
: that would mean that this age/cycle would have been
: 1300 years long: 1000 years between the last Leveler
: and the next one + those 300 years it took to defeat
: Balor.

Except we know for certain that TFL takes place a thousand years after the days of Connacht, which (assuming a dark age began as soon as Balor showed up) makes the last light age at most 700 years long and the dark age that followed it at least 300; getting very close to my split-millennia there already. And if the Leveller comes every thousand years, and Balor came 300 years ago, that would mean that the preceding Leveller (whoever he was) must have come 1300 years ago, 300 years before Connacht, leaving you with another 300 years of darkness preceding the 700 years of light preceding 300 years of darkness... which is basically my short cycle still, just lopsided by two centuries, and runs into your same concerns about the thousand years of darkness that supposedly preceded Connacht.

All that aside though, what we know from the texts is not that the Leveller COMES every thousand years, but that he DIES every thousand years. And that Tharsis erupts and the comet comes around the time the Leveller dies, not when he first shows up. So it would seem, if the length of a dark age varies, it varies not by how long it takes to defeat the Leveller, but by how soon before his fated demise he decides to show up.

(Incidentally, this puts the cutscene from TFL of Balor standing on his ramparts with the comet behind him in the sky in a very different light. The comet comes to herald the Leveller's demise; so that's not Balor standing there with his source of power "got his back", that's Balor standing there with his impending doom creeping up behind him).

: Because and age of light can only begin after the Leveler
: is fried. And if the Leveler is around for 300 years
: this would mean that:

: A the age of darkness was 800
: years - if u believe that every age is 500 years.

: B the age of darkness was 1300 years long - if u believe
: that every age is 1000 years.

I'm not sure why you're adding the length of a fixed age to the length of a variable Leveller's reign to get the length of a dark age. Makes more sense that a dark age is the period during which a Leveller reigns; from when he shows up to when he dies.

Either way, both figures you give above contradict what we know:

If the last dark age was 800 years long, that would mean that Connacht's Age of Light only lasted 200 years, because we know Connacht's time was 1000 years ago. What caused the world to turn dark (and stay that way) 500 years before Balor showed up? That makes no sense.

If the last dark age was 1300 years long, then it began only 300 years before Connacht's time (running into your same objection about the thousand years of Myrkridian rule before Connacht), and much more insanely means that Connacht didn't usher in a light age at all and that it's been dark since centuries before he was born, all throughut the past millennium (including the period called the Age of Light), and didn't actually turn light until Balor died. That makes even less sense.
