In Response To: Re: The Leveller, Mjarin, Myth III e.t.c. (Denorius)

: So u are arguing that the Leveler appears some 500 years
: after the last one is defeated thus ending the age of
: light and beginning the age of Darknes, but the cycle
: is 1000 years? between the defeat of one Leveler and
: the other?

Yeah, pretty much. And that it's not like a sudden switch from lightness to dark; after the Leveller's defeat, the light spends 500 years (re)building civilization, then the Leveller returns and spends 500 years destroying it, only to be defeated right before he's done, allowing rebuilding to begin again.

: Pretty stretching it to get your 500/500 theory through.
: As with the Mykrirdia.

: Why should they have keept still for hundreds of years?
: They were monsters they only purpouse was killing and
: what about hunger? They too needed to eat - and the
: few animals in the woods were certainly not enough.

: Fact is the Myrkridia were around for 1000 years. Even
: disorganized as a feral horde they would have hunted
: killed and destroyed. So to say: "Ah for some 500
: years the Myrks were just around doing nothing"
: to save your 500 years of light theory.....

I already admitted that it presents a problem prima facie, but there are lots of things that present a problem for the thousand years each of light and darkness, too. I think it's easier to reconcile the Myrkridia just existing and being undefeated in combat (but not necessarily destroying the world yet), the last age of light, than it is to reconcile Balor waging war on major nations and turning them all into walking undead (the Myrmidons), during the most recent age of light.

Every top predator on Earth (with the exception of humans, if you count us) tends to be much more sparse than their prey. It's just a basic ecological necessity. Gazelle greatly outnumber lions, for instance. And no gazelle has ever defeated a lion, but that doesn't mean that the lions are dominating the lands of the gazelle with an iron fist and running them to extinction; the populations naturally balance each other.

Now if we humans wanted, we could go in and breed and train the lions (especially if lions were secretly as intelligent as humans and just hadn't had their industrial revolution yet), then unleash them on the world to wipe every trace of gazelle from history leaving nothing but mountains of their gnawed bones.

That's my hypothesis for the human-myrkridian relationship. They were a top predator species in normal ecological balance with the other humanoids of the Myth world, scary monsters in the dark places of the world that will devour you if they find you, but not a major political force until Moagim made them into a crazy world-destroying army that nearly ate us all out of existence.

: Read this: In the world of Myth, the forces of Light and
: Dark rule the world successively in a thousand-year
: cycle which has repeated since before recorded
: history. Every cycle climaxes in the arrival of The
: Leveler, whose approach (and fall) is heralded by an
: ominous comet that appears in the sky every thousand
: years. The Leveler inhabits the body of the hero who
: defeated him in the previous cycle—thus the hero who
: saves the civilization is doomed to destroy it.

Wikipedia is not a reliable source for Myth info. I have that page on my watchlist and you'd be amazed how much blatant disinformation gets added there (e.g. names of the unknown Fallen Lords that aren't even from mods or fan fiction that I can find, apparently something that editor just made up one day).
