Not as much as knowing John is a 27-year veteran of the Human-Covenant War who at the young age of only 6 was kidnapped and trained to become a supersoldier to suppress Human colonial rebellions. The sort of kid who looks before leaping, is incredibly scrappy, highly instinctual, and has evolved as a warfighter and as a leader tremendously. Without knowing all that I can't stay that I would have bothered to become a fan in the first place.
: Yes but how did YOU react to Guilty Spark and the Flood? Forget worrying
: wbout how the Chief character may or may not have reacted.
Why would I forget? I want to know what he's feeling. Yeah, I have my own reaction, of course, but that doesn't mean I don't want to know what's going on in the character's head or how they plan to overcome this adversity. You seem to think that I want to know what a character is all about at the expense of my own reactions to events and how they play with my emotions. A story isn't worth your time if it doesn't make you feel. In my own opinion, the same can also be said for a story that doesn't bother to take the time to do the same for its characters.
