I read the above as: I enjoyed the game but when I read the books I enjoyed it even more.
I played game then read books much later.
I suppose that the whole clone thing was a turn off for me. Like my parents had to watch me die when I as a kid. Whaaat!??!
When I first played the game I had no problems stepping into his shoes - apart from being more of a pacifist then. Playing halo has inured me to the idea of killing (in a fictional setting).
And I found, in the first game especially, that the Chief's wants matched my wants. I LOVED the idea of exploring a ringworld. The location of the survivors was were those mysterious things were shooting into space. I was curious to find out what happened to Keyes, and then I wanted to run away. :-) And I thought that it was only socially responsible of me to save the galaxy.
I suppose a 30/40 something man was alien to you and natural to me. perhaps you needed more to relate to? Or just some other hook into the character?
