When I play a story game I'm doing it not only because I want to experience a rich universe with characters worth investing in, but gameplay that keeps me coming back no matter if that story is years old and stale in my mind. Halo is exactly that in most cases. I barely played Spartan Assault and Spartan Strike because the stories weren't interesting and the gameplay was just not fun for me.
Why play through a game's story if you aren't actually having fun? I absolutely love Metal Gear and it was my first video game love all the way back from 1998. I've had a hell of a time trying to experience what must be a shocking conclusion to the franchise in Metal Gear Solid V because of gameplay that I just can't get excited about. Normally I would have finished MGSV in under 24 hours because Hideo Kojima's storytelling is absolutely top notch. Right now, a month later, I'm just a little over half-way through this slightly non-linear story and I don't really care at all. It's too much of an investment for a story that honestly hasn't gripped me like it had with previous incarnations.
I feel like a grandma saying all that.
