: Someone once told me that mass media killed the conspiracy. Without
: nationwide news coverage, the Watergate scandal would have blown over if
: it ever came to light in the first place. Thanks to the internet and
: bloggers and alternative media, we know about Operation Fast and Furious,
: NSA spying, and every nasty detail that Wikileaks has unearthed. Something
: with a big budgetary and personnel footprint, like training and equipping
: 30+ child soldiers, wouldn't stay hidden for long.
: But the UNSC can spend trillions of credits like chump change. They have a
: whole planet full of wilderness to train Spartans in, and another more
: secretive planet to train whole companies of them. ONI is big enough that
: finding employees that don't care one way or the other about child
: soldiers shouldn't be a problem. There's AIs to perform background checks,
: monitor communications, and watch the news media for signs of trouble.
: For the UNSC, the Spartan II project was doable.
: Perhaps it would have been as interesting as Marathon?
I think most people who read the earlier Nylund books, and played the games, could easily have missed the fact that, leaving aside the insurrection and the Covenant obliterating your world, life for a civilian plainly sucks. 26th century humanity reads a whole lot like a dystopia on many colonies, and I'm glad 343 is delving into that long-ignored aspect. Hunt the Truth, in particular, made it clear how hard it would be to evade detection by an AI or some computer sniffing out dissent.
