: You bring your, not blank slatedness and overlay the character with it.
That's just kind of weird though. If I go back 12 years to Halo: Combat Evolved when the hushed casket is unsealed, giving you free reign to do whatever you'd like to the Master Chief, I can't personally imagine that this 41-year old hulking supersoldier was actually an 11-year old girl. One who was worried about not fitting in at her new school and one who dealt with countless emotional problems. That's certainly not what allowed this individual Spartan to get where he was in the scope of this narrative. Everything I've experienced in my young life to date didn't allow me to jump into the Halo universe on an intrinsic level like that.
I couldn't possibly understand what someone like the Master Chief was going through at this point having retreated from Reach and abandoned his buddies, facing down the Covenant in a guerilla war, being frightened by the horrors of the Flood, or countering the precise recklessness of Halo's robot stewards. It hasn't been until very, very recently that I've been able to relate to the Master Chief as a person. Mind you, this wasn't until after 343 Industries had shied away from making the Chief a vessel for players and instead took the time to fully realize who this man really was so we could see the depth of his character.
