I like to know how people tick. Even if I can't relate to them on a basic level like with gender, age, race, religion, or occupation, I still want to be introduced something completely alien to me so I can find an element of their character that I can't help but want more of. That's what latched me onto even a simple person like the Master Chief in that manner, and on a personal, relatable level much later as the series progressed.
