To each his own, of course, but I for one hope 343i continues on their current path and invests in helping me relate to the protagonist whose shoes I fill in these games. I think the blank slate silent protagonist isn't necessarily a poor choice in game storytelling, but I am unconvinced it is a better way to tell a story than inhabiting a fleshed out character. bioshock infinite vs the first bioshock's protagonist immediately comes to mind as a valid comparison.
Maybe I don't just want to inhabit these lush, exciting, alien worlds... I also want to be an exciting person on a journey in that world. perhaps it's escapism on my part, but that's a big part of why I've always played games. multi player is fun, but the story keeps me coming back.
: In most media, yes. In a game you have to actively get in the way, because a
: game puts you in their shoes and the structure makes you invested in
: whether they get helped or hurt. When you experience a death in a game and
: you comment on it, do you say "the Chief died" or "Mario
: died" or whatever? I'm willing to bet that, no, you say " I
: died". That's why a blank slate character works better in games than
: anywhere else and can actually help a game be what it's trying to be.
: A blank slate isn't great for telling a determined story, no, but it's not
: inherently a fault when it comes to video games.
