: If I claimed that a teapot was in orbit of Jupiter, it would be burden of
: proof on me to provide evidence of this circumstance, not on you to
: disprove it was there or not.
Sure. Because the default stance in this case would be mine: I have no reason to believe there is a teapot orbiting Jupiter.
If you firmly believed there was because you observed it, then the default stance would be yours: There IS a teapot orbiting Jupiter. It would be my burden to prove to you that there is no teapot orbiting Jupiter. A much harder position to prove, because it would be require my observation of all of what would be considered space in which something could orbit Jupiter, and that nothing would exist that you could classify as "teapot orbiting Jupiter". Logically, it can be done. Practically? Not so much.
: You can't even provide a definition of what this 'vital spark' is in any
: concrete terms and yet life exists on this planet. That suggests on the
: face of it that it's not required, but if you can provide either a
: definition or evidence of its presence, I'd certainly love to hear it.
The fact that life exists doesn't prove there is no 'vital spark'. Our own terminology for matter includes this separation of life and non-life. Just because that separation hasn't been explicitly defined doesn't mean it doesn't exist. We observe the difference, we just haven't been able to explain it (let alone prove there is no difference).
I sincerely do not understand why some people here do not get the difference between 'biological' and 'non-biological'. I am not stating that this elusive "Vital Spark" (which I didn't name, btw) exists. I am only, and have ever only said that we know there is a difference between Life and non-Life. Between biological organisms and inert/non-biological matter. I personally believe in what here has been coined the "vital spark", but that is my belief, and no observation has disproven that. So why do you care what I (or I'd wager most of human civilization) believe? I'm fully aware that many believe we come from inert matter, but I also believe they would agree that there is a difference between a person and a rock that we cannot currently explain, which makes us ALIVE.
