Hardly an issue of personal anecdote. Anyone with a monitor and a PC can quickly move their mouse back and forth around the desktop and see that the mouse's movement isn't fluid. Given how huge the visible jumps are with my own mouse-shuffling skills and the 70Hz monitor I'm using, I'd bet that I could still see the issue at many times this refresh rate.

By the way, I did a search for this Douglas fellow, and it would appear that he does think you can meaningfully go above 72.

In this, he blatantly says there's no clear threshold. And he later even talks about using adaptive framerates in films to maintain "cinematic" low framerates while ramping it up to compensate for sequences with fast motion... where he mentions going at least as high as 120fps for sufficiently fast sequences.
