I could have replied with a video of Blood Gulch and said, "THIS here seems to pretty much not fit the bill" but that seemed too mock-y.
: What would your definition of an arena shooter be? I would say a fast paced
: first person shooter with equal advantage given to all players involved
: that is balanced from 1v1 to small scale teamplay. So tell me how Halo
: doesn't fit that bill exactly? Not to mention all the arena style maps
: that you seem to have forgotten: Battle Creek. (symmetrical)
: Chill Out.
: Chiron.
: Damnation.
: Derelict. (symmetrical)
: Gephyrophobia. (symmetrical)
: Hang 'Em High.
: Longest. (symmetrical)
: Prisoner.
: Rat Race.
: Wizard. (symmetrical)
: Arguments could also be made for Blood Gulch and Boarding Action despite the
: nontraditional setups. Halo 1 was very much an arena shooter
: buddy-friend-guy.
Halo is not Quake or Unreal Tournament. It only has two weapon slots, fisrt of all. Gameplay is really quite slow. Halo hasn't really ever been "fast paced", especially when compared to the games I just named or even something like Call of Duty (also not an arena shooter). I guess Halo 4 sort of got way faster when you consider endless sprint and their attempts to make Halo more like Call of Duty, but Halo 4 is clearly an exception since H5 seems like it's going back to the older games.
There are plenty of large maps, plenty of vehicles, your health is basically constantly recharging and coming back to you outside of H1, and it's largely team-based. You can also boost the living daylights out of the game. Halo maps seem to do a good job of letting you play in whatever way you want, which I happen to really like. Arena shooter maps for the most part, do almost everything they can to direct gameplay. I guess I'm implying direction vs. accomodation? I dunno. I'm failing to describe this part more eloquently.
Halo was pretty unique as far as consoles go, and even compared to a lot of PC shooters. Labeling it an arena shooter is a joke in my opinion. That same opinion can also be applied forward in the Halo series. If anything, I'm being too disingenuous by not acknowledging how Halo was influenced by arena shooters or how it took some bits and pieces from them. Bungie has always done a great job of taking things from other types of systems or styles and making them awesome (I point you to Myth and Oni in this case). I feel like Halo is the same. They did not create just another arena shooter, or even an arena shooter.
