: 343i tries copying mechanics from other games. Does so poorly. Tries to
: introduce own modes at the exclusion of beloved ones. They're hardly
: played. Player activity drops off a cliff and never recovers.
: What to do? Stick to your guns and improve the implementation? Go in a
: totally new direction?
: Or ditch it all and try to re-create 'the glory days', instead? Yep, that's
: the one. Go with that.
: The stripped out, early Beta, that is suddenly so vitally important (but
: wasn't for Halo 4). The back-to-basics approach. Navel gazing at an era of
: 'Arena FPS' that is perhaps 10+ years in the past and, to me, best
: typified by Quake and Unreal. It all says to me that 343i don't really
: know what they're doing with Halo. I'm not sure they ever did.
: Now, Halo 5 won't be a bad game. It can't be if it's built on Halo and has
: had 10s of millions of dollars thrown at it. It'll look shiny and seem
: polished and entertain for a bit...
: Though, I don't see any point in paying any attention to it. It's the only
: Xbox exclusive I have any interest in at all but, with a PS4 already in my
: possession I can't justify another console for literally 1 game (and some
: ports of old games I already have). I probably won't be playing any new
: Halo.
: If Halo were multi-platform it'd still be on the radar. Alas, it's a victim
: of the corporate game we call the 'console wars.' Always has been, I
: suppose.
: Feel a bit sad.
A little bit of damned if you do, damned if you don't. Stick with the same old formula and you're not good enough to try something new. Try something new and you tinker with what made the series great. Really though, the evolution of Halo 4 is a much bigger step from the Halo's before it than Bungie's new 'World of Halo-Borderlands' is a departure from present games, but Bungie has earned our faith with Halo 1, 2 and ODST while 343I was always seen as the goofy Matt Saracen brought into replace the lovable Jason Street after he couldn't play anymore. Things aren't always going to be the same, but after a rough start to the season, I see the state championship ahead with Halo 5 and beyond.
