: I feel pretty jaded and my interest in Halo is at an all-time low.
: 343i tries copying mechanics from other games. Does so poorly. Tries to
: introduce own modes at the exclusion of beloved ones. They're hardly
: played. Player activity drops off a cliff and never recovers.
: What to do? Stick to your guns and improve the implementation? Go in a
: totally new direction?
Why continue going in a direction that the fans clearly don't enjoy? What company would do that? They want to make the fans happy and want to create a game that they will enjoy. With Halo 4, they wanted to further some of the changes that were made in Halo Reach and it ended up back firing. The community didn't really LOVE Reach, and mostly hated Halo 4, so why continue on that path? What they feel is necessary is to go back to what made Halo great.
: Or ditch it all and try to re-create 'the glory days', instead? Yep, that's
: the one. Go with that.
You've heard the terms "fair starts" and "arena style" and you suddenly know exactly what Halo 5 is going to be. Quake, Unreal tournament, Halo 1 and 2, they could all be described as arena-style shooters, but they are DRASTICALLY different games. No one like Halo 4 because sprint sucked, the loadouts made the game seem unfair, they removed weapon spawns, etc. Everything that seemed to distinguish Halo from the rest of the shooters out there was removed and it ended up feeling weird. Halo 4's map set had pretty much nothing but open outdoor maps with a winding "Warthog track" around the outside and tunnels on the inside for infantry. It was uninspired and boring. All they are saying is that they learned from what the fans liked and disliked and want to get back to that arena style feeling. And not only that, but that video was talking about the BETA not Halo 5 as a whole. They said that the Beta would focus on 4v4 arena style gameplay. That says nothing about the rest of the game.
: The stripped out, early Beta, that is suddenly so vitally important (but
: wasn't for Halo 4). The back-to-basics approach. Navel gazing at an era of
: 'Arena FPS' that is perhaps 10+ years in the past and, to me, best
: typified by Quake and Unreal. It all says to me that 343i don't really
: know what they're doing with Halo. I'm not sure they ever did.
Again, arena FPS does nothing to tell you what the game is going to be like. You are making assumptions and then making a post ripping 343 apart based on those assumptions. Don't do that. What it sounds like is that you don't want them looking back at previous games for how to do Halo right, and you don't want them moving forward with the industry. What do you want them to do?
I think they know exactly what they are doing with Halo. I had almost no excitement for Halo 4, but I am starting to feel different about this game. I hear that same passion in their voice that I heard when Bungie was describing making Halo 2 and 3.
343 had a lot to accomplish while trying to ship Halo 4. They were doing so many new things, they had to rebuild the engine, and so many other other things. Sometimes, it's best to focus on the game that you are making instead of taking time away from development to create a beta. Then I see you getting mad that they didn't have a beta for Halo 4, and now you are acting like it's stupid for them to have a Halo 5 beta. Pick a side dude. Look at what they are doing, and realize that they are learning from past mistakes. They are trying to craft a Halo that captures what made us love the original trilogy. It's not an easy thing to do, but I think they are doing a fantastic job with Halo 5. They are going back to what the fans love, and you can't really complain about that.
: Though, I don't see any point in paying any attention to it. It's the only
: Xbox exclusive I have any interest in at all but, with a PS4 already in my
: possession I can't justify another console for literally 1 game (and some
: ports of old games I already have). I probably won't be playing any new
: Halo.
They I guess we won't see you posting on here anymore? You sound like your mind is made up already after seeing literally 20 seconds of the game over a year before the official release. Do you see why I felt like laughing at your post when I first read it?
