This response isn't specifically Halo-related, but another hobby of mine is going through the literally exact same type of growing pain.

My other big hobby is geocaching. And in the official forums there are repeated, ongoing, redundant arguments made by the 'veterans' that the game is worse off now than it was 10 years ago because of smartphones (as opposed to the tried and true dedicated handheld GPS), and there are endless rants that Groundspeak (the company that essentially has the monopoly on the pastime) is in 'it for the money', 'doesn't listen to its customers', 'only cares about the smartphone generation', etc etc... essentially that the hobby is being ruined by the one company that effectively runs it (and relies on it), and they really can do no right. Meanwhile, the hobby is still extremely popular, still growing, has plenty of support and praise, but mostly from a very different segment of its population.

I see pretty much the same thing happening with Halo. 343 has it now. It's not what it was 10 years ago. They're doing things very differently from Bungie and it's pretty much a no-win situation to a segment of the community.

I don't know if there's a solution. All I know is that yep, things change, and the sentiments and feels we get in this Halo community (old and new) are exactly the same types of sentiments expressed in other hobbies, other games, other fandoms... it happens... things change...

How that'll play out in the future for or against its success, we'll have to wait and find out.

*sigh*

(PS: I'm on the always-excited-for-Halo-stuff side of the fence, btw :) just like my ongoing love for geocaching, not in the 'they're killing the hobby' crowd)
