What would your definition of an arena shooter be? I would say a fast paced first person shooter with equal advantage given to all players involved that is balanced from 1v1 to small scale teamplay. So tell me how Halo doesn't fit that bill exactly? Not to mention all the arena style maps that you seem to have forgotten:

Battle Creek. (symmetrical)
Chill Out.
Chiron.
Damnation.
Derelict. (symmetrical)
Gephyrophobia. (symmetrical)
Hang 'Em High.
Longest. (symmetrical)
Prisoner.
Rat Race.
Wizard. (symmetrical)

Arguments could also be made for Blood Gulch and Boarding Action despite the nontraditional setups. Halo 1 was very much an arena shooter buddy-friend-guy.
