The only thing required to play the game.
: Some people took off valuable time from work or school to play this.
That was their choice (I've done this as well, but I can't factor this into something they'd owe me to compensate)
: Some people bought an Xbox One ($350 plus tax) solely for this.
That was their choice (I did this as well, but I can't factor this into cost which they'd owe me to compensate)
: And even if they do manage to fix all these problems, the population of this
: game -- the game that was supposed to lead to a renaissance in Halo
: multiplayer that fans have been awaiting for years -- has suffered a
: permanent and possibly crippling blow.

The only justified rage I believe is whether they deliver what they promise for $60. Not the additional purchase of XBO, not living-related choices, not anything above and beyond the $60 cost of the game.
That said, it's reasonable that people who do all those things would be upset. The object of that anger is in question. Knowing this, 343I has chosen to address that and take it upon themselves to sacrifice on the business end in favour of attempting to improve community relations.
I applaud them for that.
I do not believe they owe us that.
All they owe us, and I believe they've well acknowledged this, is the working product for which we paid $60, and only as much as they promised would be delivered for that $60. That's it.
