They didn't have to fix it, and they're not charging for it, plus (and this is the important part) I am grateful, so a response like "thanks" makes sense. (thanks, BTW, 343i)

To be more scientific about it, positive reinforcement can work and so can negative reinforcement, but it tends to be even more effective (AFAIK) to use them together, so why wouldn't you? In this case, that would be not just saying you dislike changes that degrade the game for you, but also saying you do like changes that improve the game for you.
To put it yet another way, feedback is important in making something for a group of people, especially if it's an ongoing process, whether that feedback is positive or negative.
