: Doesn’t matter if it comes from the same place. The impulse to control and
: infantilize others (as being unable, for example, to distinguish between
: fantasy from reality) is the same.
Of course it matters, intent always matters. That doesn't mean you have to agree with the methods or the approach, it doesn't mean I do agree, but the intent you have going into something matters.
: (And let’s give credit to thebruce, whose arguments in part were about kids,
: who obviously are a lot closer to infancy.)
I still fail to see how it would be harmful to anyone of any age unless someone is there making it be harmful.
: I’ve lost track of all the current flavors, frankly. I was a pretty avid
: feminist until my mid-twenties, when the self-loathing that seemed to be
: required got to be a bit much (and I realized that men weren’t the only
: humans capable of being pigs). Nowadays, the less concrete the theory, the
: more skeptical I am. When it comes to real stats, women in this country
: are doing pretty well, and it bothers me how little concern I hear about
: women in non-Western countries. I’ll stop making off-point points now.
Well since you're on the Internet, I think it behooves you know what other people on the Internet have seen, and what they've seen is a lot of bitching about women who are themselves bitching about men. In particular, it seems that you and I are the last two people on HBO that haven't learned every single thing about the people of Tumblr (except their massive amounts of both boring pointless blogs and weird porn), sided with them or against them, and then left HBO because they all apparently picked the other side.
: I get it. You personally found Cortana less sexy in H4 and therefore don’t
: see the issue with kids seeing her.
No, actually, those two things are unrelated.
I thought that, since Cortana was not sexy in Halo 4, there was not a sexual drive that went into the redesign of her form for that game, and I may have been mistaken on that point.
As for kids...
: I really believe that on the first point you’re an outlier.
: The second issue I think is a parental prerogative. You can disagree with
: a parent who doesn’t want (what looks to them to be) a naked woman in
: their kids’ games, but it’s not your call.
I didn't say it was my call. (?) I just said it's a call that doesn't make any sense to make in that way.
: Do I often speak up when these issues come up? I am weak, I guess, because
: the smart thing to do is run for the hills. If you want to know in what
: direction my thinking goes these days is, I invite you to seek out Camille
: Paglia interviews on the subject or drop by the factual feminist youtube channel.
: I mostly agree with these women regarding the current state of feminism.
alright
: I’m also not comfortable having this discussion here because for
: some people, it is tantamount to discussing religion, and it’s also hard
: to discuss properly without getting into politics—two subjects verboten on
: the forum (ALL PRAISE LORD HIGH MASTER WU!).
I think that's where a lot of the problems come from. If you politicize social issues you're going to muddy both of them and probably not elevate the discourse. If we're going to talk about women and their rights and their traits and whatever else, let's leave our defensiveness and pride and confirmation bias and opponent bias relating to political ties out of it.
Anyway at least mod action would be, you know, action.
: Peace to you all, you virtual killers of virtual aliens. I’m okay, you’re okay.
