I grew up using an old gas stove. I now design gas stoves for a living. I work every day in an R&D lab surounded by gas appliances. In fact I'm siting here right now waiting on a gas powered water heater to finish testing. There is a lot of regulation and testing that goes into making sure that they ate safe and produce safe levels of carbon monoxide. Still, it's always a good idea to have a CO detector where ever you're using gas. Of you do that, there's nothing to be afraid of.
