: testing. There is a lot of regulation and testing that goes into making
: sure that they ate safe and produce safe levels of carbon monoxide. Still,
: it's always a good idea to have a CO detector where ever you're using gas.

These guys created an artificial neuroglobin. I quote,

O2 affinities and exchange timescales match natural globins with distal histidines, with the remarkable exception that O2 binds tighter than CO.

If we could use genetic engineering to replace the whole chain of haemoglobins and neuroglobins with artificial variants then our offspring we'd never need to worry about CO poisoning ever.
