I have to admit, I like the ending just fine. Chief's line weren't "hamfisted" to me at all. It showed that he was so jarred by Cortana's passing that he did something he has never really done before. Spoken aloud about his feelings.

After watching your version though, I definitely like it better. I think it can work both ways, but I have to agree, removing the line definitely makes it better.
