Clearly players that play more will be better at it then someone who just started a week ago. Right? Nope. More often then not, I personally encounter players/guest with very low scores/ranks that end up at the top of the leaderboards. Why? My guess is that they are trolling. They either did something stupid to loose their account or they started a new one just to make other other players miserable. And those so called "Guest" are the actual owners of the Gamer Tag but the real guest is often low on score by the end of the match and using the Real Gamer Tag. It's impossible to get a balance in MM.
With contest like this Infinity Contest, it is possible to weed out cheaters as mentioned above. And it's MUCH easier to place players in True Skill Ranks. Similar to the new CSR system. Doing this will allow fair competition and thus allow more winners. VERY similar to a weight class system in wrestling. Even then Timmy who started wrestling today wouldn't be as good as Michael who started a week ago. But that's the point isn't it? The better player in THAT CLASS would end up as the victor. However, to do this 'True Skill Class' system, it'd take more time and result in less contests. Which is fin by me. If I have a better chance at winning, then the better the contest.
Now someone mentioned a Forging Contest. I like those. But the above still applies. The more time one has, the better they will be at it. More experience with it, then the better they will be. Just look at ForgeHub. Those guys are Crazy Good. One thing that seems to not be taken into account is that the more a person (even MLG) plays a game, the more they know about weapon balance, map flow, and balance. So Classes would sill be required for a Forging contest.
For those that don't already know, PeteTheDuck held a Forging contest last year. It was AWESOME. Parts of it I didn't like. But that's mostly because my ego got the better of me. And I once again apologize for that, Pete. The End the end, the best Forger won. And he won by a Tie Breaker To Boot. That was something that I believe none of us expected. Who won? Well you'll just have to watch the videos and see. But I STRONGLY suggest you watch them IN ORDER. Each has great forging tips and feedback. I wish there was another Forging contest like this. But one with classes, because there are clearly Forgers that have more time to devote to Forging and testing their maps/creations. My favorite part of the contest is the fact that each challenge was so different then the last.
