I feel like you're deluding yourself here. Throw/catch and even the ball object itself are lifted from the new Oddball gametype. They were developed as features for that gametype - not Grifball - and were revealed and demoed as such.
: and continuous rounds to make the game faster,
Which is arguably the worst thing in the gametype.
: It was clearly given some level of priority during development,
: which Grifball had never received before
Now you're downplaying Bungie's support for it.
Bungie provided the tools and let it be it's own thing. They didn't try to impose their own vision on it.
: So when it comes to 343 getting community involvement and feedback, Grifball
: seems to be the prime example. I'm not sure why they love us so much...
Because it was already very popular. They care very much about popularity and features visibly getting 'use.' It's easy for them to justify that way.
Grifball's core design is (surprisingly, given it's amateur origins) very good. If 343i were really serious about developing it properly they'd drop these silly pretenses of 'making it faster' and follow the sport analogy closer. Or give more tools so others could.
Hint: name me 3 sports that don't pause and reset in some way after a point is won.
