I simply like the scale and scope of everything. Religious undertones or not (the game is called "Halo"), it's the scale that interests me. And not everything has to be absolute. The Forerunner's defeated the Precursors, there's a possibility humanity could rebel against their idea of the Mantle and establish something far greater. I simply like it as a story of humanity needing to do what's right for everyone, not just themselves. There's a great message in that.
On top of that, I just love really large-scale stories. The Forerunner trilogy is one of my favorite stories within the universe because of the sheer reach of its effects, esp. given only a few individual's decisions. Dune was the first true science fiction novel that I ever read, and it set the tone for what I like. I'm happy to see Halo keep upping the stakes. We've had enough of "fighting for humanity to survive". We're morally better than that (now, and in fictional 2558), and aiming for more makes for more interesting stories, IMO.
