In Response To: Re: new screens... (Dan Rudolph) well, a mixed bag in my opinion. The character models have been cleaned up a bit. There seems to be more emphasis on 'stylisation' of the environments, rather than trying to literally mimic real life environments (think = a painting versus a 'unplanned' photograph; a painting exxagarates the contrast, lighting, color to make the scene have more impact, rather than a plain photograph taken withouth any lighting aid). Although maybe it has always been like that, just that we're only now seeing a variety of other environments than before. Nice new particle effects, much more refined compared to some earlier ones I saw. What I didn't like: Overall illusion of lighting seems to be nonexistant. I'm not talking about the actual lighting capabilities of the engine. But rather the illusion of it. For a good example, take a look at some Metal Gear Solid screenshots, a much more backward engine, but with much more capable artists who accentuate what the engine can do with illusionary tricks using textures and colors. The texture artists seem to lack the experience to fully exploit the engine. Before you call me crazy, take a look again at Metal Gear Solid shots (the pc version even) - despite a much lower resolution and a simplistic 3d engine (relatively to current pc/mac standards), look at how the texture artists have worked to overcome the low poly count to still create the *illusion* of a convincing (if a little theatrical) urban/industrial environments. Quite frankly, the textures (especially for the environments) are pretty unimaginative (no, I'm not thinking Quake or unreal...). If they were going for a anime look (=simplified, cartoonised?) then I think they've missed the point about what anime is. Its either 'hyper' realistic (exaggarated realism = MGS, Ghost in the shell) or 'stylised' toons. (= pokemon, speed racer, etc). THe look they have achieved now is somewhere in between, which doesnt work for me. Take a look at the character models. They don't have any 'mood' at all, in terms of lighting or color. They appear flat and dull. Also, I really did expect a much more sophisticated shadows, rather than a lump of grey underneath the characters. One striking characteristic of all realistic anime (only realistic anime use shadows realistically like Oni, not cartoony stuff like pokemon) is very good use of shadows and lighting to achieve mood. It would have been nice if this was identified as one of the key characteristics of anime to carry over into the game. It would have made for much more impressive looking graphics (heck, with good shadows, you could pretty much reduce poly count overall and still look better than the current screenshots). Sorry about being pretty negative. Its only an opinion. Its just that I expected *soooo* much more from bungie as far as the graphics were concerned. I'm still upbeat about buying ONI, as I do expect the gameplay to more than overcome what I perceive to be a shortcoming (by bungie's standards) in the graphics department.
