I think he just meant he was glad he didnt get hit with one of those arrows. Besides, if he was a Fir'bog, it might be more obvious when he talked and pronounced some names. He seemed to know most of the continent's landmarks, and didn't really sound like a foreigner of any sort.
You have to remember, it says in some of his journal entries that he joined the legion sometime during the early years of the war. In the manual, he talked about working on his grandfather's farm as a child. And just the whole journal book sounds like it comes from someone who may have lived in one of the skorched cities of the west.
I'm still guessing he's a warrior or a soldier of sorts. He doesn't talk the way a Fir'Bolg or Journeyman would, and its doubtful that he might be a berserker. And i'm sure he's not a dwarf.
