In the mission, "The road north", you have to go into the dire marshes to recover the special of bow from the dead scouting party. (have to follow the trail of blood, remember?)
In that journal entry, it states:
"A few men and I are leaving the main column in a few moments to discover the fate of a scouting party which has not returned. None of us expect to find them alive, but we must recover an artifact carried by their leader, gr'Uman, Lieutenant of Archers."
And as you finish that level, the winning scene shows that Fir'Bolg carving and making the special tips of the arrows from the watchers arm. It makes sense that you would need to recover this special bow, because in the next few days, the legion will be firing those special arrows into the Watcher.
