: I don't know any autistic people personally, but I know
: of others on different forums. One in particular
: stands out because he remembers almost literally
: everything. I have a decent memory but this guy... My
: simple understanding is that there are varying levels
: of autism?

Yes. High functioning basically means "You can pass for normal with sufficient effort, other than your oddball traits and quirks". Explaining all of this would be rather difficult, so my advice is to look it up online. Or Asperger's syndrome, which is another possibility for what exactly is going on with it. As the guy you mentioned indicates, there is a somewhat higher than average (I believe) chance of extremely freaky talent/ability...idiot savants or just plain savants. But its not an unmixed blessing.

: Alric had originally planned to entertain children at
: parties, but soon word of Balor spread and he had to
: abandon his true calling. Some things are hard to let
: go of, though.

That would make a hillarious flavor text. Something like...

"...Despite having to forfeit his dreams of scaring small children at birthday parties, Alric retained his clown makeup until the end of the Great War..."

: Myth 3, I actually found it difficult to play because all
: of the units seemed so out of whack to me. I had
: trouble adjusting to it, and I didn't find the story
: telling to be anywhere on par with the first two
: games. That said, I liked the desperate sense in TFL,
: but also enjoyed the rising in power light being
: caught by surprise aspect in Soulblighter, and the
: desperate run to get the Total Codex, the crown, and
: Balmung. Both of the stories did an excellent job at
: keeping me on edge and actually interested. I honestly
: don't know if I could pick the better one, so I'll
: just say that I like them both equally.

If you'll pardon a Star Wars comparison of sorts...
Myth TFL is sort of like The Empire Strikes Back, Myth 2 is kind of like A New Hope, and Myth 3 is Attack of the Clones.

: Favorite all time character? That's tough, as a lot of
: the characters we never get the chance to know. The
: gut response is Alric, because he ends up walking
: around blowing up Myrkridia (and your own units) with
: Balmung and finally killing Soulblighter, who I felt
: was a better villain than Balor. Villain wise,
: Soulblighter, because they fleshed him out more, and
: he had a habit of disemboweling my men in one swift
: swing. I don't think I'd want to meet him though.

Yeah. Bungie made a very convincing evil pyschopath in Soulblighter. Any of the characters "...we never get the chance to know." that you would want to know to change that, or at least know more about?

: Longer post than yours, but I haven't talked to people
: who have actually played, enjoyed, and been fascinated
: by the universe of Myth. It's incredibly refreshing to
: talk to someone who knows Bungie outside of Halo. I
: can't tell you how crushed I was they were bought out
: by Microsoft and published it on the Xbox (though I
: wrote a fair amount of fan fiction on it under the
: name NevinNiven at HBO before the change to console
: was announced and back when we didn't know anything
: about the game. Incidentally, the Hermes Trismegistus
: series is a really great read, better than anything I
: ever did). Of course I played them and will be playing
: Halo 3 when it comes out, this all thanks to my
: console gaming roommate who really really likes Halo a
: little too much.

: Which brings me to a tangent (which should probably be a
: new thread)! Hooray! I was discussing how I think
: Bungie's peak storytelling occurred in the Myth series
: with journal entries before a level load and how they
: could explore the world and expand the mythos and
: whatnot. When he said a quote along the lines of,
: "most gamers need visual stimulation and that's
: why stories are being packed into cutscenes." It
: struck me as sadly true, Gears of War is being praised
: of late for it's story, but to be honest it's story
: wasn't very special, had obvious conflicts, and what
: little there is of it wasn't revealed in game but
: rather in frakking online sources. Funnily enough, I
: really like DooM 3 not because the story was terribly
: original (in that it was primarily DooM's) but because
: you could read e-mails and listen to people's logs
: from PDAs.

I personally think 'most gamers need visual stimulation..." is a load of crap. If game companies produced quality games (like Myth is a quality game), most gamers who wanted to blow things up and such would buy such games. But if all that gets published is Diablo kind of games, all gamers play will be Diablo kind of games. It sucks.

: I'll admit I never played all the way through the
: Marathon trilogy until recently (though I read an
: awful lot of the Marathon story pages... I'd like to
: think that made up for my deliquency). Pathways I
: never got the chance to play, and am considering
: buying the Mac Action Sack for $20 despite not having
: an Apple computer (which were the only thing in my
: family after we junked an orange and black screened 3
: or 486 I played Math Rabbit on, until I got a PC for
: gaming when I was 14).

Myth TFL and Myth 2 are my only investments into Bungie's work, and unless Bungie produces Myth 4 will probably stay that way. Halo and the others don't quite appeal to me, but they sound splendidly done.
