I remember backing away from a FRG wielding Brute Chieftain in Halo 3 - I had a plasma grenade and a Brute spike-grenade-whatever-it's-called. The pg was selected but they don't stick to Chieftains so I pressed the button to switch to the spiky-thing then I threw the grenade.
Unfortunately I stepped over a frag grenade as I back pedaled and it became the selected grenade. It bounced off the Brutes chest and exploded at my feet. Then he meleed me and I died.
DOH!
: However, I'm not against having more than two types
: available to anyone who wants them. If there are going to be more than
: two types though, I'd like the ability to select which types I'm happy to
: acquire. The HUD would adapt accordingly (it wouldn't show icons for
: unselected types).
I always felt that the developers struggled to justify the extra grenade types. For example:
If they had kept the old animations that effectively prevented an opponent charging you when stuck, and if they hadn't made some Brutes non-stick for plasma grenades - then spike grenades would have just been a pointless re-skin of a plasma grenade.
Brute incendiary grenades were a bit meh for me. Although I did take a disturbing pleasure in hearing the Brutes suffer. But I have never missed those grenades in subsequent games. (I would surely miss plasma grenades if they were taken out of Halo.)
And those Promethean grenades are also instantly forgettable. Their only redeeming quality is that, with the Catch skull on, you can easily kill Promethean Knights when they spam grenades.
If I could pick the grenades that appeared in-game then I'd like a UI that let me reassign grenade types before I played. For example: I could tell the game to have Brutes use and drop plasma grenades instead of spike grenades.
