Well, to be fair resolution is probably one of the things that least affects the quality of an image, at least when you are beyond a certain point.
The new systems allow you the use of more advanced effects, and a higher frame rate, both of which offer a large benefit to quality.
If you don't believe me when I say resolution isn't that important, then crank the original Quake up to 2600 x 1600 and compare that to Crysis 3 running at 800 x 600 on ultra. Which looks better?
