Not to spoil much for you, but the on rails thing was planned for gameplay and story. It's like you're there and observing things instead of being allowed to explore for a reason. The scripted events are there for a reason. As has been stated, there's a twist to the story and, when combined with how the game has played out, it's pretty brilliant. Play control, yeah, I had my issues on it, though I definitely enjoyed the combat. I think if you somehow managed to make yourself stick through to the end, when taking the gameplay in context with the story (which heavily impacts said gameplay), I think you might potentially be pleasantly surprised.
