See, I might be the minority on this but I would have loved to see a gun like that! Gimme more cool space things that defy conventional physics and logic as humans 'know' it. Gimme more things like the Needler and sticky grenades! Make it feel alien and unfamiliar!
I can totally see this being a legitimate problem for them. Players (myself included) can be dumb.
Players clamor for new things, new encounters, innovation and invention yet they want things to be "familiar". That's a hard target to hit. I don't envy game developers and I especially don't envy 343.
"We want things to be different! We don't want the same game every year!"
"No! You made things too different! I don't want to try this new thing, it isn't like the old things! Didn't you understand what I told you before!? Gah 343 you dum!!11!"
Damned if you do damned if you don't a lot of the time, unfortunately.
I wish they didn't play to the lowest common denominator sometimes.
I'll sum it up like this: 343i tries to hard to be Bungie. 343 is not and will never be Bungie- and that's OK!
I want 343 to be like 343
Bungie makes games that they want to play. If a person doesn't like said game they don't have to play it - that's it. That kind of business model probably isn't the best for profits, but when Bungie was independent they didn't have to worry about that and they ended up making a phenomenal game that ballooned into a thing of its own.
343 is trying to make Halo a game that everyone wants to play, but in doing so set themselves up for criticism and setbacks.
It's kinda like... like.... your JOB versus your PASSION. I love computers so I chose a career in it and thus I don't look at my job like a 'job'. I like making things on the 405th, but if it was my job I wouldn't like it because I don't know how to make things other people like- I know how to make things I like.
I get the feeling that for some people at 343 its their job to work on Halo content but Halo content is not their passion. It's probably not accurate, its just my feeling.
It the things you don't expect that can impress you the most. I would still respect 343 for taking a big risk and failing than for not taking one and trying to be safer. Even if I didn't like the game they made, I would still be happy they tried to wow me. But again, I'm the minority.
