I was about to come to your defense but you're fucking high if you think nobody cared about or was influenced by Pi.

I don't think Pi will be remembered along the same lines as GWTW or Star Wars or Citizen Cane but that doesn't mean that Aranofsky didn't use the black-and-white medium to his advantage. The sharp contrasts give the entire film an uneasy, paranoid quality which fits the tone of the movie perfectly.

Also, Schindler's List. The extremely limited use of color is used as a purely emotional storytelling device (the little girl's red coat being pretty much the only color in the film).

Sin City was a masterwork in early digital filmmaking.

There are of course movies that use B&W as a gimmick and don't do anything with it *cough*The Artist*cough* but there are movies before and after The Wizard Of Oz that do nothing special with color, or movies before and after Avatar that do nothing special with depth. B&W was the better choice for Pi and Schindler's List and Sin City. The lack of color can be used just as effectively as color itself.
