I'm working on my bachelor's degree in industrial design. Career-wise I'm more oriented towards the service and product design end of the spectrum than the more artsy concept/character design one, though. That said, I've done some minor illustration gigs and I do quite a bit of character design as a personal hobby.
So that obviously has an effect on how I look at aesthetics, though most of what it does in this case is help understand and analyze why something looks good or bad. Because Good Design is surprisingly quantifiable when you get down to it. You don't have to be a designer to find fault in a thing with no knees having knee guards, though.
