This is a perfect analogy. :)
I have a nostalgic fondness for the Mark V but the Mark VI, especially the H3 version, tapped perfectly into Master Chief and Halo as a whole. Somewhat functional, somewhat detailed, but iconic, colorful, and readable. It also felt unique (although obviously grounded in the lineage of the space-marine).
A few of these new suits look like Crysis under-armor with various Gundam pieces attached. They're so detailed and layered they lose their identity in themselves and the other games the art direction is trying to tap. Another way to say that: they're so impressive in the zoom-in they're just a jumble of stuff in the zoom-out. Personally, I think you should be able comprehend a silhouette and learn swaths about the character in a few seconds. I can only really do that with the Chief and the ODST here, and even that is a little difficult.
