: Yeah...but who really is the hero? To be honest both trailers did make it
: seem like Chief really did something that led to that catastrophe although
: somehow Locke's intervention, at least it is implied in the second
: trailer, led things to go arwry from what the Chief was trying to achieve
: and backfired, which led to his speech before pulling the pistol on Locke.
: Either way, 343 today showed us Halo 5 will be VERY dark and even more
: angst possibly between the Chief and Locke than the Chief and Arbiter had.
: Still, I feel somewhat sad that John, the hero we have all known for
: years, granted against his will and forced into this life, is now being
: made into a traitor or a great evil. Never saw this coming from 343i as a
: continuation of HIS story. I really hope they clear this up and John is
: still a hero after this, otherwise, 343i will have killed Halo by making
: the main character evil.

"...will become the tyrant of tomorrow, if he does not crucify himself today."

I loved Joseph Campbell's book "The Hero of a Thousand Faces", but this is the strongest (and most poignant) message that I got from the book upon finishing it. The implication that once a hero fulfills his role as a force of change, he runs the risk of repeating the cycle in the way of becoming THE evil that has to be vanquished for the greater good, and his only true path, most of the times, is sacrifice.

I actually think this is a fascinating development. John's psyche is a mess now, and not only pulling him away from both Cortana and the UNSC will force him to adapt: In this way, whatever is happening, John is on a dire place akin to a rebirth into a new person. One thing people misinterpret often from the hero's journey is that they see it as solid, stone steps, when it's not. Steps repeat, can be in different order, can be prone to interpretation, mixed together, and most mythologies take a big dip into psychology and the molding and changing of stories as time passes.

This has been one hell of a day for me. First the finale of "The Virgin Witch Maria" (which made me so happy), and then the Hunt the Truth revelations (which broke my heart on both Locke and John's ends).
