The ball-carrier could use Sprint all the time. Evade was disabled, however, when the ball was picked up.
One Grifballer discovered early on (about two weeks after the game came out) that you could roll immediately after you picked up the ball, giving you a super-speed boost. It was a tricky button combo, and if your screwed it up it often resulted in your death and a turnover. League Grifballers loved this move, called the "barrel roll", and embraced it as a part of the game.
When we asked Bungie to include Grifball Dash in the Grifball playlist, they said no. They said that the barrel roll was a glitch that shouldn't be in matchmaking. In 2011, when 343 took over the Reach playlists, we asked them if we could include Grifball Dash in the playlist despite the barrel roll. 343's response was "Sure! You guys know best." We got it added the very next playlist refresh.
343 seems to be taking a similar track for the Halo 2 button glitches.
