Simple solution is to make it non-canon. But then they'd have to make most of what comes afterwards non-canon too. And some stuff before too. Where do they stop throwing stuff out? Oh, what the heck, throw it all out.
(In all honesty, I know that's far too simple, but it's an excuse I can settle with.)
