By that arguement, might as well do away with humans in games. Make all games like Pac-Man or Teris, with no connection to anything real (except Pac-Man had the fruit).

Realism is important because it makes games immersive. In cases where it would make the game less immersive or less fun, it's a bad idea. Here, it was screwing with the hit-flashes. This causes practical problems, as those flashes give important information as well as drawing attention to the unrealism of the flashes. Plus, it makes the game less fun for people who are averse to blood.
