In Response To: Re: Oni Multiplayer... (Michael Spencer)

: Technical: even 300 ms latency is enough to cause synchronization issues if
: the game is kept real-time. Most games get around this with game models
: that aren't so sensitive to latency (in SubSpace, bombs take the better
: part of a second or longer to reach their target, making a quarter-second
: delay less significant) or sidestep it altogether (in You Don't Know Jack:
: 5th Dementia, there is one and only one time-sensitive event at a time --
: the buzz-in -- so all clients handshake before the question begins, and
: clients are trusted to report their buzz-in timings honestly.)

Man ... I used to leave dial up companies if i couldnt get under 200ms pings, and I dont play on cable unless im scoring less than 100

You might want to have included some games like Tribes, which has sweet network code, its a twitch fps, with enough action right next to you (agreed it isnt hand to hand but either is subspace or you dont know jack), tribes can manage to preform well for people with very high pings +300, sure the person with 25ms ping has a large advantage, but untill we all get 25ms pings, we cant defeat that little issue.

The main point of the debate, is that there are people who do have sweet network connections, and who do live in 3-6 person houses who would love to play this game, but because modem players will cry, it has been completly removed, instead of being at least left as a unsupported feature.

: Would you accept an Oni that ran all hand-to-hand fights in slow motion?

Why would latency cause this?

: Would you accept an Oni where firearms were the only dependable weapons in
: multiplayer?

Maybe with a dodgy dial up connection, but seeing that there is network code available (e3) at least make add that as a completly unsupported product so people with uber network connections or lans can at least get a bit more life out of a product.

: Would you accept an Oni where you could only play
: cooperative, and your players would pass through each other and never
: touch each other?

First part yes, second part I dont know what dodgy network connection you are useing, but I dont get (and for the most part never had) that problem with most games online. Sure I can understand how hand to hand combat could be a bit tougher to predict, but hell quite honestly, if the basics of the product exsist, then it makes sense to add it as a unsupported feature.

: More likely, would you accept an Oni that would only play multiplayer over a
: local network, or over an exceptionally fast internet connection?

Thats a silly question, here is a better one. Would you accept an Oni with no network play, or one with single player and lan/fast internet ? I would go for the same product with some level of network play, so at least people who do live in small lans, or go to lans very often, or have uber sweet cable modem pings ... can get more life to the product at hand.

: For more information about this latency beast and what Bungie is up against
: in trying to code around it, I recommend an article from Gamasutra:
: "The Internet Sucks: Or, What I Learned Coding X-Wing vs. TIE
: Fighter" by Peter Lincroft.

Sure latency is a problem online, anyone who has played any online game knows it well. But realy, if they release it as a unsupported feature, it can at least benifit some people, instead of no one.
