In Response To: Re: The Myth Journal Writer (Martel)

: Okay, this is to address all criticisms to the thoery,
: not just the ones from Calalier Guy's response, ok?

: I know that. I was referring to the "The story that
: hasn't happened yet" bit from the Myth3 manual.

: I wasn't suggesting that he wasn't in the army, but
: rather than he was a hilltop general, a bit like
: Saladin, rather than a front-line sword swinger, and
: that this is why we never actually see him ingame.
: Sure, he seems to have got his hands dirty in close
: combat on a few occasions, as seen in the journal
: entries, but in the missions we never recieve a unit
: with any distinct "this guy is the journal
: writer" suggestion.

"Falling back from two myrmidons in Forest Heart..."
Yes it does sound like he knows how to fight.

: He often refers to The Legion in the third person. Are
: you suggesting that he isn't a part of the Legion
: either? ;)

We donn't(or at least I don't)get a very clear idea of what exactly is meant by "the Legion" since on the second scenario for example "The vanguard of our army, twenty thousand men..."
If memory serves, the Roman Legions were about 5,000 men strong at full fighting strength, presumably so would the Province/Free Cities Legions. Also, after 17 years of fighting the Legions would probably be depleted in manpower.

: Seraph: No, Rabican was the most physically proficient of
: the Nine.

Okay. I thought Maelduin got the honors... but I could be totally out of my mind.
Please do me a favor and post something to explain that... I've always had the idea that although they might have had different command styles and such, all of the Nine would be about equally strong.

: More Seraph: In the prologue, he speaks of the Jman as
: being mad when he is regaled with the spinning world
: theory.

Doesn't it sound crazy though? From the prespective of someone who lives on that world at least.

: Yet more Seraph: We can see that the Fallen Lords,
: despite their immense prowess, rarely commit
: themselves to combat immediately, preferring to hold
: back and direct the larger scheme of things. With less
: individual prowess and less expendable troops, it
: would stand to reason that the Avatara would not
: normally wade into battle in the desperate, gung-ho
: manner we see Alric use in the later levels.

I'm confused.
With less expendable troops, i.e a need to avoid losses, an Avatara would be LESS likely to help his troops out personally?

Maybe I just misinterpreted that.

Also at the start of TFL (the game, not the war) the West is in a very bad position (judging by the JW and the destruction of the Province)so I would think an Avatara would be in the thick of the fighting.

But that's from the prespective of a warrior. Quoting the manuel (and maybe shooting my arguement in the foot, but you'll bring this up anyway)

Avatara
"The Nine powerful sorcerers who lead the Legion against Balor and the Fallen Lords. Because of their years of training as magic users and strategists, they tend to avoid melee combat but can be vicious when they have to be. Each Avatar* carries a sword and knows how to use it. Each Avatar has unique magical ability."

*probably a typo for Avatara.

Personally I think that although they might not be kicking butts in melee, an Avatara is still likely to be leading from the front, it's much more inspiring to hear "Come on" then "Go on".
Also their magical abilities would come in handy since a Warrior 1 on 1 will beat a Thrall, but most battles are more like at least 2+ to 1 Thrall #: Warrior #. So it would probably be a good idea for an Avatara to not stay back well behind the lines.

Thank you for explaining your reasoning... I may not agree with you but it is well thought out.
Also, this is an interesting thread... let's keep it going..
