I think the the takeaway we should have from the 30 year franchise success stories is that it was never the plan. Star Wars, Star Trek, Mario, and etc. have built from year to year, always focusing on the next iteration. I'm sure after they proved their staying power, their plans extended by several iterations/ years/ spinoffs, but I can't imagine they ever looked farther than 5 years at any time.

I think Halo should stop being afraid of it's niche and embrace it. I understand wanting to go big all the time, but at some rate, the intimacy between the game and the fans is lost. Some devs can still accomplish this in big installments, but I feel like they are more rare than they are predictable.
