It's a 343 trend of writing at this point. Light shields and whatnot were touched upon in-novel, but to just pull it out of thin air to save Chief while his hand is touching a nuke that he just set off in H4 completely nukes immersion and suspension of disbelief. No precedent was set in the game for this being a possibility.

I saw Expendables 3 the other day. Hardly a bastion of great or even good writing. Mediocre might be too nice. Certain people in the movie have particular sets of skills that get shown off early on, some very shortly, seemingly just because they just happen to be doing whatever at the time. These skills come back up later in the movie when they're needed, and you're not just sitting there calling bullshit because they already showed these people with these abilities before. Even a lame and punchy action movie designed for laughs and explosions can get basic writing down (while bombing at the box office). It's just sad. Expect more of it in the future.
