I don't know if should have an end or not. I do think it should have a rest, and continue to rest every now and then, I think that's what's best for the universe and the franchise. By "rest", I mean I think it should have a period of a few years (or more) where nothing Halo-related comes out, or at least nothing major (which would leave action figures, art books, re-issues of novels, stuff like that). I think if Bungie had sole ownership of Halo they would be giving it a rest, if not now then a few years ago or a few years from now, and I think that Microsoft will need a lot of evidence to be convinced to do this, and if they ever are convinced that evidence will almost definitely come in the form of a major drop in sales.
