The way Star Trek overcame that is the invention of the transporter and replicator technology. When you have someone who says 'I want all the gold!', and you can go to a replicator or transporter and make any amount of it, material wealth loses its meaning. Plus you can produce enough food with the same kind of technology. No hunger. No greed (in the sense we have now). Realistic? Dunno. Guess we'll need to invent the transporter and see. Although warp drive is more feasible.
